Sandy Salty Beach Water and Locking Hair

I went to the beach the other day. The sea was fairly rough but the salt water splashing against my in-need-of-a-massage-back was all I wanted that day. The second I got out of the car, however, I was met by sand beneath my feet... that may eventually get into my hair. This isn't usually a bad thing but now that I am trying to lock my hair, I was concerned.

If you checked out the picture above, you'll see my hair after a couple hours of gallivanting in the salty sea water. No visible sand! My hair felt great - until it dried. The salt water made my hair very dry and almost brittle. I wasted no time rinsing out my hair and adding a moisturizer and oil on getting home. I didn't have a significant amount of sand in my hair. I think one key is washing your hair as soon as possible before giving the sand the opportunity settle in. This may prove harder with mature locs but my baby-braidlocs did just fine. I plan to use a apple cider vinegar and baking soda if I go to the beach with mature locs.

Now, a lot of people suggest salt water for encouraging a speedy locking process. I don't like the idea. You basically dissolve sea salt in warm water, cool, then add to your locs (oil optional). My locs, to me, are still hair to be nurtured. I still want some amount of softness and the friends should not feel like they are touching steel wool when they touch my hair. I like the idea of moisturizing and having the softest locs possible. Sea salt can be very drying to both the scalp and the hair strands. Nevertheless, here are some other ideas on salt water and locs.

KiK: How long have you been natural and what inspired the transition?

Peeks: Aftermuch experimenting, weave, colour & relaxer I put my hair through the milland had a looot of breakage! Peeks: Oh gosh, I’m totally transitioning I really hate short hairon me (love it on others), I have a pea head you see. lol. I had a big chop oncedue to blonde hair & relaxer gone very wrong, warning do not attempt youwill have no hair! Eeeek, that’s what happened to me, I had to cut my hair,but hated having short hair. I still relaxed as I didn’t even think at thatpoint to go natural, so this time I’m a transitioning sista !

KiK: So, the question everyone asks - what is your hair regimen?

Peeks: You can justgive us a brief summary. Well Inormally wash my hair every 7-10 days depending on what styles I’ve been doing. I love olive oil shampoo &conditioner. I don’t wrap my hairbut I also put some product in at night and massage a lil. For that I usuallyuse olive oil, carrot cream or shea butter.

KiK: Was it easier to maintain your hair when it was relaxed?

Peeks: Yes I had been relaxed for yeeeears. And yes it was so much easier tomaintain & honestly that is the hardest part of going natural, it’s a wholedifferent approach to managing, styling, products… everything. You really needto learn and understand how to play this new afro game, its like having a babyto tend to.

KiK: Thanks for being so honest. lol. It was hard for me too. Will you ever flat-iron or relax your hair?

Peeks: I wont go back to relaxer butI do use flat irons and hairdryers, it just depends on what I want to do withmy hairstyle. Just because I am going natural doesn’t mean I never want to rocka straight or wavy look, to me it’s the best of both worlds as I now have addedvolume because of the re-growth.

KiK: What do you wish you knew when you just started to go natural?

Peeks: Hmmm. Youdeffo have to be mentally ready to do it, I would say spend some timeresearching and learning how to keep & grow natural hair. I find my hairneeds constant moisture. Oh andkeep encouraged, look for hairstyles for variouse hair length stages so you don’t get bored, ifyou miss having length cause you did a big chop or your hair grows slow aint noshame in using hair pieces or wigs till you feel comfortable, do what works foryou gurl!

KiK: Before you go, what are your three favorite natural products?

Peeks: I loooovealoe vera, my goodness did it stop my hair breakage and shedding! I use it ingel form from Holland & barrott. Shea butter and water, I feel a lil waterstops it from feeling so dry and helps absorb the products I use.

Iwear my hair out 99% of the time, so my nightly routine consist of: applying daily leave-in conditioners,spraying water mixed with Aloe Vera juice, and sealing with an oil or pomade. Igently detangle my hair after which I place 5-6 plaits and cover with a satincap for the night.

KiK: Was it easier to maintain your hair when it was relaxed (if you were everrelaxed)?
Vanie: Not at all

KiK: You experienced hair damage from dyeing your hair before right? Why didyou decide to dye it again?
Vanie: Yes,I have damaged my natural hair with color and I nursed my hair back to healthand decided to color again.During the process of nursing my hair back to health, I learnt how to reallytake care of color-treated hair... So I spiced up my hair with color onceagain.

Johara on Locks and Life

Middle Eastern dance student, Johara, is a Data Manager and Illustrator from Raleigh North Carolina in the United States. The 30-year-old is very busy but took time out to answer a few of Keep It Kinky's questions about being locked for over 4 years. Check out her interview below where she talks about how she started and maintains her hair and how her lifestyle has affected how she has managed her locks over the past few years.

KiK: How long have you had locs and why did you decide to get them?

Johara: I started locking my hair in the summer of 2007. I had been wearing my loose natural hair for about a year at that point. Actually, I had a dream about having locs one night. It was something I hadn't even contemplated doing, but after that dream I started to look into locs and the different methods of maintaining them. It helped that my cousin had locs, she took me to her loctitian for a consultation and I made an appointment that day.

KiK: Great. So, do you ever miss your loose natural hair though?

Johara: I wouldn't say I miss it, but sometimes I do think to myself that I'd like to have big loose hair. But I love my locs!

KiK: Tell us more about what method you used to start your locs?

Johara: My locs were started by a loctitian using the traditional comb coils, I probably had about 4-5 inches of hair.

KiK: So how do you maintain your hair now?

Johara: After 3 months of visiting the loctitian I decided to become DIYer. When I first started maintaining the locs myself I used the latching method because I am very active and love to swim. With the latching method I did not have to re-twist my baby locs every time they got wet. This was not a matter of keeping them looking neat, as you can see from my Fotki, I love the fuzzy loc look. But it was a time saver for my lifestyle at that point. I eventually switched back to twisting/palm rolling once they locked. I usually wash my hair once or twice a week, palm roll the first few rows and let the rest be. About once a month I will palm roll all of them.

KiK: If you could loc your hair again, what would you do differently?

Johara: Lets see.... I would probably stick to one maintenance method. Also I was drawn to fat locs, I think I'd like to try a smaller size if I started over.

KiK: Will you ever cut or cut off your locs?

Johara: Well early last year I cut bangs into my locs, lol. It's cute but now I hate the length difference. Cutting them into styles is something I can see myself doing in the future. I won't say I'll never cut them off but I know that if I do it will be because I want a loose fro or I want to start another set of locs. I will never let go of the freedom natural hair has given me!

KiK: So tell us more about your daily grind. How did you get started and where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Johara: I have been a Data Manager for an Industrial Hygiene company for the last 6 years and am also attending art school part time. In 5 years I see myself as a full-time Freelance Illustrator licensing my work to various manufacturers for consumer products. I also study Middle Eastern Dance and am looking forward to becoming a professional in that line of work. I plan to join the Bellydancers of Color Association (BOCA http://www.bellydancersofcolor.com/) and spread the love of dance to others.

5 Confessions of Kinky-Haired Girl

Many people don't always write the not-so-positive things that come to mind on their blogs. Today, I am not going to be many people.

Confession #1

Sometimes I envy white people with long, naturally thick, pin-straight and dark-coloured hair. May we have a moment of silence while I meditate on my sin of ungratefulness?... Hey. That kind of hair seems easier to style. My envy, however, is usually followed by the fact that I prefer the look of natural hair.

Confession #2

We waste too much time on natural hair. No, don't stop reading my blog. LOL. Seriously though, If it's taking you 45 minutes to prep your hair every night, and 25 minutes to style in the morning, your hair may be taking up too much of your time. Most of us don't even devote that much time to our health. You may need to find an easier hair regimen.

Confession #3

I love my YouTube natural hair bloggers but don't understand why so many videos exist on "how to do wash and go's." It's not a wash and go if it's taking you 15-30 minutes to style your hair with gel before you go. C'mon people. Wash – Go. Plus or minus a little drying or 1 minute application of an allover product, it's a pretty simple concept.

Confession #4

I want to let everyone know that not every natural hairstyle looks good on you... or me. OK? It's just like relaxed hair. You need to find a style that works for and suits you.

Confession #5

Miss Natural Natzi says that she is sooo proud of her tightly coiled/kinky natural hair yet her life mission is to achieve a "perfect" twist-out that looks like someone else's curls. Of course, she never wants her natural texture to show because that would be a bad hair day. (Sigh) She is kind of annoying.

Easy Red and Black Crackle Nail Design

I wore Berry Red nail polish by LA Colours with a random black polish on my middle finger for two days before applying Color Club's black crackle polish to my red nails. As usual, I used Won't Chip® by Orly as my topcoat. LA Colours has some really nice nail colours in their collections.

Berry Red by itself does not last very long on the nail and chips quite easily. The polish on the tips of my nails seemed to rub down very quickly too. Add a topcoat, however, and you're good to go.

I LOVE crackle combinations because they tend to reinforce the nail which minimizes chipping and tearing. The combination lasted me four days with only a little rubbing at the tips as seen in the picture of my nails below. I got a couple of chips on day 5 but I could really wear this for another day.

So in all, the colours combined lasted me 7 days. I loved it. It's Friday now and time to do my nails again. Let me know what you think about the combination.

Tip!

If you're trying to grow out your nails and want to reduce tearing or chipping, add a crackle for reinforcement. Your nails will be long and strong in very little time.

Mushrooms Stir Fry (Vegetarian Recipe)

Mushroom Stir Fry Ingredients

I'm about 75% vegetarian and 95% pescatarian now. It's taken me long enough. I've been trying to be vegetarian for years but kept going back to meat. Anyway, along my ongoing journey to vegetarianism, I have gotten to like a few recipes. The latest one, Mushrooms Stir Fried, is what I will share with you today.

Mushroom Stir Fry

Ingredients
2 cups clean mushrooms (see video below)
1 large green pepper
1 stalk Escallion
1 medium onion
1 clove garlic
1 large piece bok choy or medium cabbage
1/4 - 1/2 cup snow peas
1 tbsp coconut oil
Soy sauce, black pepper and sea salt to taste

Optional Ingredients
Red pepper
1 small carrot
Califlower
Broccoli
Ginger (great flavour-changer)

Prep Tips:

Slice mushrooms as shown in video below
Slice Carrot and Green Peppers (same size as mushrooms)
Dice onion, garlic and escallions

Instructions

Saute diced onion then add garlic and escallion a few seconds toward the end (in coconut oil).
Add your mushrooms, green peppers and snow peas. Add sea salt and black pepper and a dash or two of soy sauce.
Add the remaining ingredients and add a bit more oil and soya sauce to taste.
Sit fry and steam to add moisture by covering the pan briefly from time to time.
If desired, sprinkle water for moisture.
Keep stirring until finished.

Serve warm with brown rice or pasta if desired.

I love a good filling meal. I also understand what the Jimmy Dean ad execs are trying to say but this commercial still made me... pretty angry.

300 calories of crap is 300 calories of crap. I'm not saying that Jimmy Dean is all crap but it sure isn't balanced. Of course it's dum to be starving yourself eating a handful of grains for breakfast but you also can have a healthy balanced and filling meal.

I thought the ads were cute until I saw this one below. If all your care about is calories and don't give a shed hair about your health - fine... but please ladies and gents, don't buy into the crap you see on tv. Have healthy, balanced meals for breakfast. OK I'm done - now watch the ad then comment if you think I'm being super-sensitive (or not). Hehe.

An Oversimplification of Her Beauty

The website says that author/director, Terence Nance, "explores the fantasies, emotions, and memories that race through his mind during a singular moment in time. I say that this film demonstrates the way many black women with natural hair wish that they were accepted and depicted in film. We just don't see ourselves in film enough. Oh yeah - "we" are black women with natural hair.

I'm not hating on women with loose kinks and curls, but a large number (what to me seems to be the majority) of black women in media with natural hair have loose curls - not tight kinks. For many reasons, this trailer was refreshingly unique, and heart-warming. Watch the trailer below then visit the website to find out more about the film.

How to Interlock Locs/Dreadlocks

This set lasted me 5 days without having to reset my hair. I like my perm rods but I don't think I'll be rodding my hair for as long as I have these lock loops. The best part of these loops is how comfortable they were to sleep on. Keep reading for the pros and cons and scroll down for an image of how my hair looked on day 5 of wearing these curls without re-curling my hair in any way. Oh yah. I have a video on it as well.

Pros

Very comfortable. No problem sleeping with them in.
They are soft and light. No heavy head of rollers for you.
They give anywhere from small to large curls depending on how much you roll on the loop.
They can give tight or loose curls.
Lock loops withstand heat!
They are easy to put in and quick to remove.

Cons

They are made of foam and might not be very durable. They can get mangled even though they return to their usual shape if left for a while.
I'm not sure foam and water are long lost friends. Will they withstand constant wetting?

I first tried the lock loops in 2009 after winning them from Chescaleigh on YouTube. I didn't have locks at the time but used them on freshly done plait on dry hair. The pic below shows how that dry set turned out. It wasn't the best but it was also done on dry hair so I wasn't complaining.

Neither do we usually think that 25 crunches a day will make much of a difference to our abs. Nevertheless, figured that the challenges suggested by justaskinnyminute would be a fun and easy way to develop some self-discipline and incorporate a little movement into my day. Sadly, I felt a slight cramp in my legs after just 50 jumping jacks. I know I should be too embarrassed to admit that but whatever. I'm trying to keep it real here in KiK land.

Nail Polish Swatch/Review: Misa's A Sin Worth Committing

It's one of those vampy colours that is dark enough to be subtle and chrome enough to make you feel like you're wearing a hot sports car on your fingernails. Hahaha. Really though, I got lots of compliments on the nail colour. That was nice but those compliments mean nothing if the polish didn't wear the way I wanted. This being my first Misa polish, I thought it appropriate to do a review. In case you missed it, the colour is called A Sin Worth Committing.

This polish is opaque with one quote but is most striking with two. Without a topcoat, it gets a bit dull after about two days and is best worn with a topcoat. With my topcoat I had minimal wearing of the edges until day 4 but the polish still looked good. Once I got down into my weekend chores, the chipping began but the polish still looked good. Only my index fingers and right thumb really chipped. All in all, I'll be checking out a few more Misa colours because I loved this polish.

I'll be doing a lot more polish swatches this year. The will show my nails on day 1 and day 5/7. Don't forget to bookmark KeepitKinky or follow and comment.

Both mother and daughter share a similar hair type that shrinks up with lots of kinks and both of them are thoroughly enjoying life with natural hair. But with all the influence from me2dia, how does Nicole encourage her daughter to love her natural hair?

Nicole says:

I encourage her to touch her hair and experience it for herself. I let her rinse the shampoo out sometimes under the shower by herself. She love to feel the water run down her strands.
I sometimes let her choose the style she wants to wear. I want her to feel beautiful and confident so if she wants two pony puffs one day I give it to her and she feels fierce with her natural hair.
I always praise her hair while styling it – telling her it is so beautiful and soft. I love her cute curlies.

A 2-Minute Damage Control Hairstyle

I had an old braid-out I didn't set the night before. I woke the next morning and needed to get out in 30 minutes. I did this quick 3 minute hairstyle. A tutorial follows the pics if you are interested.

It was simple. This is how I did it.

I did a centre part to the middle of my head. (No real detangling required.)
I then took out a bit on one side for a small bang.
Then on that same side I did a loose flat twist that I secured with two pins.
I repeated this on the other side.

That's all folks. It took me about 2 minutes to get my messy slept on hair looking like a planned style. lol. Can you believe my hair reaches my nose stretched?! Sometimes shrinkage is as annoying as an itch but I gotta love this natural hair.

My kinky, coily hair has never felt more moisturised. I was worried about retaining moisture in this newly coloured hair, but now, I'm very happy with the moisture level in my hair. Keep reading to find out how I have retained moisture and reduced breakage with my kinky curly "natural" hair.

A few things have changed in my regimen. I no longer use clarifying shampoos and am trying a number of new products as I go along. Here are the products I used this week (new items highlighted):

Shampoo: Creme of Nature Detangling Shampoo – weekly
Conditioner: Suave Humectant – twice a week
Deep Condition: Queen Helene Cholesterol – weekly
Protein/Water Spritz: Water with Infusium 23 added (leave-in protein treatment) – daily
Moisture Treatment (Leave-In): Raw Shea butter with Olive Oil/Coconut Oil mixed – almost daily
Moisture Sealant: Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil – daily
Non–Moisture Treatment Day: African Royale Braids Spray (which is followed by the oil)

For my daily routine, I always apply things in this order:

spritz water
moisture treatment or African Royale Braids Spray
oil

So far, I have little to no breakage and my hair has never been more manageable.

Christmas is coming and I will be needing a break from the daily styling of my hair. I can't decide whether to get extensions put in and try to keep them till the end of January OR I could just get my own hair twisted up every two weeks - which is actually more expensive. What do you think?

The Dangerously Addictive Tangle Teezer?

The Tangle Teezer gained popularity last year as the saviour of the kinky and curly-haired woman. Women all over the online natural hair community stood in praise of the quick-detangling brush that they have been wanting to reduce detangling time. The Tangle Teezer soon became my not-so guilty pleasure. The Denman brush's reign came to a speedy end. So what went wrong?

It seemed to start with one video, then two blog posts, then the skepticism was catching on almost as quickly as the product's popularity. Many began to accuse the pet comb look-a-like of causing split ends. So why am I writing this post?

Well, I have been dependent, no, addicted to the Tangle Teezer for a while. Unfortunately, after a few months, I have more split ends than I have ever experienced. Now, the main time our hair breaks (often causing split ends) is when we detangle. I only detangle wet and I have changed no other tools this year. I've noticed the increased breakage for a while but quick detangling is addictive.

But, is the Tangle Teezer dangerously addictive? Maybe it is with improper use (according to Chrish My Daughter). Watch the videos below before deciding whether to buy or use your Tangle Teezer.

I fell asleep while dyeing my hair - not good. OK, I need to start from the beginning. But first, take a look at my hair colour in the shade/indoors below.

I wanted to relax my hair, so I coloured it instead. I know that makes no sense but I wanted a drastic change and didn't want to cut my hair. Now, some may say that I'm no longer natural. That would be correct. Nevertheless, I'm still keeping it kinky! So on to the sleeping part.

You may notice that my hair is a bit bright. Well, I was aiming for something a little darker but, I was tired and fell asleep. I know. That is why I should have gone to a salon. My hair is a LOT brighter than intended. I used Clairol Textures and Tones in 4RC Cherrywood. In any case. I'm just loving the fact that there is a difference. I just want to have some fun with my hair. Still, I can already feel the difference in my hair.

Queen Helene Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream:Product Review

Your hair is like a baby. When you don't take good care of it, it dies. My hair has been dying. After my last wash and a pseudo flat-ironing session, it was clear to me that I need to deep treat my hair. I ended up the beauty supply where the store clerk suggested Queen Helene's Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream because "it leaves your hair soft, soft, soft and moisturized." I bought it. Here is the review.

How I used this product:

Wash hair with Cream of Nature Detangling Shampoo (Red Bottle)
Apply Queen Helene Cholesterol
Cover with plastic cap and continue household chores.
Remove cap after a couple of hours. (plastic cap was warm)
Rinse and style with Jane Carter Nourish and Shine.

Here are my thoughts and notes on the experience:

Gosh! This is such unappealing packaging.
It doesn't smell too bad... or too good.
It is thick and coats my hair nicely without the risk of dripping.
I instantly feel my hair getting softer.
The ingredients (below) aren't all natural... but I don't care.
Hmm. I guess this isn't supposed give slip to make detangling much easier.
After rinsing, it still feels pretty soft. Wow. It's actually softened my hair.
Hmmm. My post-wash detangling isn't so bad since my hair is softer even though I am using a detangler.
My hair is now air-dried and styled and I think my hair feels much stronger too.
I'll definitely be using this again. It's cheap and effective!

Twisted Sista De-frizz Conditioner: It moisturizes and somehow manages to give my hair a soft spiral curl. Go figure! I haven't seen that in my hair in ages. I've been using this to conditioner-wash and after going back to my old conditioner yesterday, I think I'm going to stick to this Twisted Sista product for a while.
Shatter Nail Polish: I'm loving shatter nail polish. It really reinforces the nail by giving an extra layer of polish. I've been using the Color Club brand. It dries a little harder than the usual polish and has allowed me to start growing out my nails without tearing or worrying about wearing down my manicure.
Kiss New York Maxi Shine Lipstick: I am in love with the colour Magenta. I have to scrub this thing off and it gives true to colour pay-off. You don't have to worry about buying over the counter without a tester because what you see is what you get. I love a lipstick that I can wear all day without worrying about reapplying. This thing even survived a greasy meal. I still apply twice during the hours if I'm going from day to night but I love it. It's my new staple.

Q&A Tuesday: Unravelling Knotted Twists and Plaits

Question: I keep trying to stretch my hair with plaits but it's just not working. Every time I unravel my plaits or even twists they are just a knotted crinky mess. I am about to give up on my natural hair and start blow-drying to stretch but stretching with plaits seem to work for everybody else. What am i doing wrong?

Answer: I experienced this for years and felt silly at how easy the solution to the problem is. Simply abide by the rules:

1. Borrowing hair is forbidden
Always end with the same three or two sections you started with. Don't borrow hair fro one section when you feel the sizes uneven or to get down to the very end. This only causes knots.

2. Smooth and stretch as you go
Pull the hair taught while you plait and smooth down the strands to help keep the hair smooth and detangled. It's just like roll-setting hair. If you plait or twist-set your hair with knots and crinkles, you'll have knots and crinkles when your release the plaits. Remember, natural hair tends to curl on itself so constant smoothing is advised.

Review: Conair Yellow Bird Blow Dryer

I have been using this dryer for over a decade.Used by a large number of hair stylists in Jamaica, it isn't perfect but I'm not changing it anytime soon. Keep reading to find out why the Yellow Bird hair dryer by Conair may or may not become a must-have for anyone with or without natural hair.

Pros

It works for any budget with it's low cost.
It usually comes with a comes with a comb attatchment and concentrated nozzle for whatever type of blow-drying you choose.
Powerful enough to straighten the thickest hair.
The barrel shape end allows for the easy attachment of a number of store-bought/replacement nozzles.
It has a cool setting.
Very durable.

Cons

It does not have clear instructions on the instrument for hot, cool, low or high settings.
It does not come with a diffuser. Is that even a con?
It will eventually just die but my first one lasted well over 10 years (not daily use) after much abuse so I'm not really complaining.
The new one is not as sturdy as the first but it's been a year and my yellow birdie is still going strong.

I don't know if most of those cons are even real cons. Remember though - like with any product, you can get a bad egg from the batch. This dryer, however, constantly gets good ratings. If in need, go get yourself a yellow bird dryer from Conair.

After using African Pride Hair & Scalp Spray as my braids spray for a while, I am very pleased with it so far. Like everything, it's not perfect but keep reading for more information.

Pros

Reasonably lightweight
Minimal build-up
Easy to use
Inexpensive
Very moisturizing

Cons

Glycerine ingredient may cause frizzing of natural section of braids causing a less seemless blend of natural hair with extensions
Daily use as instructed may cause stickiness
No good for oily scalps as it encourages build-up
Not really the best scent but this is a matter of opinion

I would certainly buy this product again for my braids and will be trying it on my loose natural hair as a daily moisturizer once these braids are out.

nuNAAT Karité Special Leave-In Detangler and Anti-Frizz Thermo Active

I used to have fairly long natural hair and although I wanted it and knew that a lot of other people loved my hair too, it was a nightmare to detangle. I eventually relaxed it, hated the relaxer, then cut all of my hair off. If only I knew a good detangling leave-in. Maybe nuNAAT's Leave-in Detangler and hair-dryer activated Thermo Active could have helped... or would they?

nuNAAT Karité Special Leave-in Detangler is da boss! Hahaha – I laugh when something makes me happy. As you guys know from my recent review on the shampoo and detangler, I wasn't initially blown away by the Karité line of products. They were... average and simply did the job. The detangler, however:

gave my hair slip without sticky build-up even though it isn't entirely transparent
dries clear
doesn't weigh down my hair.
(so far) doesn't impede the effectiveness of other styling aids used after detangling.
left my hair light and slightly fluffy to the touch.
is great for people who only finger-detangle in the shower or those with longer hair who don't want to stand in the shower while detangling. Otherwise put, it is great for out-of-shower post-shampoo/conditioner detangling.

Regardless of the fact that all products do not work for everyone, this detangler is definitely worth a try. Find these products in Walgreens pharmacies across the United States or online at Walgreens, Amazon or GMBS.

nuNAAT Karité SPecial Anti-Friss Thermo Active Hair Treatment... didn't hurt my hair. I added this product to my hair (which has slightly damaged ends from my recently removed braidlocs) and found that it:

didn't make my hair shiny at the end of the blow-drying process.
did not make my hair soft as I had to add a light oil and some other products to make my hair more silky in the end.
allowed my hair to be a lot more flexible.
did not make my hair feel any stronger but perhaps that is a long-term benefit.
did not damage my hair. Actually, my hair reverted back to it's kinky state within a couple of days and I really had to work at keeping the stretched effect from the blow-dryer... which was unusual.

In essence, it's another average product but there are other thing that work for me (that don't work for other naturals) that I prefer to use on my hair. At $5.99, it's worth a try if you are looking for a new product.

Jane Carter Solution Twist & Lock – Day 3 Twist-Out Update

The twist-out is doing just fine. The roots are a bit puffy but that's fine. My hair is still fairly soft for hair that has had absolutely nothing added to it. I've even slept without a bonnet and it still looks great. The roots are a little fluffy but that's probably because I've been exercising and scratching my itchy scalp. Yah - my scalp itches and gets dirty and oils very easily when I'm exercising.

It's Friday (wooohooooo!) so I will probably be separating these twists again for a bigger, wilder fluffy look. All I think I'll need is a little oil. It's a risk but it's I'll share a pic if it's a success.

A Defined Shrunken Twist-out on Natural Hair

Jane Carter did not send me these products but I have to give this product its due shout-out.

I twisted my wet/damp hair with Jane Carter Solution Twist &Lock cream. Produced specifically for natural and locked hair,. See the ingredients on Amazon.com. The butters do my hair goood. Honestly, the cream kind of feels very similar to beeswax in the hair though it is much more liquid in the jar. Beeswax has a similar effect on my hair when used on damp hair – It locks in the moisture and keeps my hair moist for days. I can't say Twist & Lock gives shine as I rub a light oil over my hair every two days but my twist-out (shrunken form being done on wet hair) looks great.

If you don't mind shrinkage, this product is great. The down side – the cost. I find it to be a little too expensive and may just try the beeswax method I used to use years ago when it's done. Nevertheless, I will be using this up until it's completely done. I would highly recommend this product for people with locks. If you are loose natural however and your hair locks easily, I would suggest you NOT keep your twists in for very long unless you are a very patient detangler.

nuNAAT Karité Conditioner and Shampoo Review

I recently received these products for review. Newly loose natural (again), I was eager to try them out to see if they would become a part of my product collection. Stay with me to find out whether they will.

The Karité Special Collection includes a Nourishing Shampoo and Reconstructive Conditioner, both of which I will be reviewing today.

Claim:

Nourishing Shampoo – Ideal for thirsty hair, this rich shampoo gently cleanses hair and
restores shine and silkiness.

Reality:

This shampoo is not for thirsty hair but I'm not picky with shampoos and it does have its benefits.

Shampoo is shampoo. It's designed to strip gunk from your hair – This shampoo strips gunk from my hair. It will strip your hair of anything including beeswax, castor oil, or any other conceivable leave-in product. For those of you heavy-handed people, like me, who sometimes load on products like shea butter, gel and beeswax to ensure the desired result of a hairstyle, this shampoo is great.

Considering that Shea butter is about 16th on the ingredients list, it's not much of an active ingredient and frankly, shea butter would not aid in cleaning hair as it tends to be a very thick and sticky substance.

Would I use it again? Yes - if i have used beeswax or have a lot of build-up in my hair. I'm a cheapy conditioner girl so most anything will do as long as it cleans my hair.

Claim:

Reconstructive Conditioner – Protects dry and damaged hair and restores elasticity, moisture
and silkiness for more manageable, touchable hair.

Reality:

I like this conditioner a lot – as a co-washing conditioner. I use this conditioner to wash my hair about twice per week. It works well and, oddly, had a very slight sud. It has decent enough slip as a detangler on 4b hair but isn't a major moisturizer though it does soften my hair. I can't say whether this thing is reconstructive. The reality is that damaged hair with split ends can't become un-split and most instant conditioners are not known for their treatment effects. It does, however, leave my hair feeling quite light and ready for whatever leave-in or styling aid is to come. I have had a lot of success using this to wash my hair and my hair responds very well to the products I follow up with.I feel like the shampoo and conditioner really clean my hair and the detangler compliments them. That is for another post, however.

Will I use this conditioner again? Yes. It works well as a moisturizing shampoo. Now, I can't wait to talk about the detangler. Check back soon for my bare-faced opinion on that too. I don't think you'll want to miss that one.

Do you knit your own scarves?
Everything I make is hand-knit by me. I used to play with yarn when I was little, rolling it into balls, or pretending I was knitting with my pencils. During my Freshman year of college, I found out that my suite-mate could knit, and I begged her to teach me. I’ve been going ever since!

Where is your operation/company based?
I am based out of St. Louis, MO at the moment. My current online store, feelingmoody.bigcartel.com, is up and running, with new items added weekly. I’ve expanded to knitting really cool turbands (turban + headbands), and I’m really excited about those, and I will be adding knit ties for men later this fall.

Where online can your designs be found?
Along with my online shop, feelingmoody.bigcartel.com, I now have an active website, www.imfeelingmoody.com, and I am working to blog posts regularly about my life, my accessories, and fashion.

When did you start your own line of scarves?
I began knitting items for myself and friends in 2004, and created my line in 2009. I would like to continue with hair accessories, and eventually begin designing decorative pillows.

Nice. So what was your inspiration to start?
When I first began to knit, I was very impatient to see the finished product! I mean, to make an entire scarf could take days, and I was a college student and didn’t have much free time. But I loved to knit. So I found myself liking really chunky yarn, and I was inspired to create smaller versions of scarves. My line of collars are small scarves with eclectic buttons to add style.

Do you have a favorite fashion designer or inspiration?
I’ve never had a favorite fashion designer, but I’m more inspired by individual style. I love vintage pieces of clothing that make a person standout. I love style that is eclectic/bohemian/chic. I’m inspired by bold and saturated colors—purples, mustard, and teal are my favorites and I love beautiful photos that express a mood. I’ve always had a thing for menswear—you know, a nice blazer, sweater, and leather accessories.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business?
Starting a business takes time. Have a vision of what you want your business to look like with your mission, goals, and product, and set goals that are attainable. Also, do your research and ask as many questions necessary. Creating a network of valuable resources will be extremely helpful.

Of course, I can't ignore your gorgeous natural hair. How long have you been natural?
Well I’ve never had a relaxer. I was too afraid to get a relaxer because people told me my hair would fall out if I did, but I used to get my hair pressed by my grandmother. When I went to college she wasn’t there to do my hair, and I wound up with a lot of hair on the kitchen floor trying to press my own hair. That’s when I made the decision to wear my hair in its natural texture.

What is your natural hair regimen?
My hair regimen is to keep things simple! It’s been pretty successful for me so far. I shampoo my hair in large twists every 3-4 weeks (I may do baking soda and conditioner rinses in between). I detangle my hair with conditioner when I choose to wash my hair, and that’s the only time a comb goes through my hair. The rest of the time, I use my fingers to remove shed hair and any knots. I wear my hair in twists most of the time because I love updos.

What are your three products can't you live without?
Water, hazelnut oil, and shea butter

What is your favorite natural hairstyle?
I used to do twist-outs all the time, but now I really love wearing my hair in twisted up-dos. I can really be creative with my hair and it adds to my personal style.

How does your hair fit into your profession?
I’ve definitely had to simplify my hair regimen to give me more free time. Instead of styling my hair daily or even weekly, I style 1-2 times a month, and that’s it! It’s up almost all the time now, and it stays hassle-free.

Morgan: I love my hair because it is apart of me. And I love me. Hair is beautiful and appealing, but at the end of the day it's just hair. In the large scheme of things, I realized I did not need to change my hair texture, burning my scalp every 6-8 weeks to change a part of me. My hair is beautiful straight but it is more beautiful kinky.

KiK: What's your hair regimen?

Morgan: When I am not being lazy I follow this regimen once a week.

KiK: And your favourite products?

Morgan: I'm really into using organic and natural products on my hair. My favorite products would have to be Oyin Handmade's Honey Hemp Conditioner, Yes To Carrots Conditioner, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and Olive Oil. Oyin and Yes to Carrots conditioners are extremely moisturizing. Out of the two, Oyin's is my absolute favorite. It is multi-purpose and therefore I use it as a conditioner and detangler. The comb glides right through my hair when I use this prior to detangling.

KiK: What would you say to someone who thinks that natural hair is too hard to handle?

Morgan: Are you afraid of a challenge? Yes natural hair can be challenging at times but so can relaxed hair. Deciding to go natural is about discovering things about yourself and your hair. I guarantee you will prefer taking care of your own hair more than sitting in a salon for four hours.

A Homemade Deep Moisturizing Conditioner Review

I can't say that I saw this exact recipe anywhere but from a mixture of recipes and information, I ended up with:

– 1 part extra virgin coconut oil

– 1 part extra virgin olive oil

– 1 part honey

The sticky mixture mixed nicely after going in the microwave for a few (10-15) seconds. I applied it using a spoon, resisting the urge to taste it. It smells sooooo good.

Despite the heavenly scent, the real test of my concoction's worth is it's ability to moisturize and condition. Well, it certainly did it's job. I could feel the change in my hair within a few minutes. I kept it on for about 20 minutes and it didn't dry at all. I do not recommend detangling with this mixture, however, and you must use a shampoo to wash it out with warm water. A cold or conditioner wash will not be sufficient. This sticky stuff will not leave your hair without the proper products.

After drying my hair, I followed up with coconut oil and did a braid-out. It was fantastic and soft. While I know I will need a few more treatments for my hair to recover from it's very dry state, this mixture was far more successful than many products I have tried.

Hair Update: I just took down my locs (again) and my hair was ridiculously dry from months of no moisturizing. (I've given up on locs by the way. I'm just too fickle with my hair). I guess I'll be blogging much more now that I have to pay attention to my hair again. lol.

Maintain a Light Blow-Out

Maintain your light blow-out nightly in four easy steps.

Moisturize your hair.
Loosely finger detangle.
Put your hair in huge flat twists.
Tie on a scarf and you're ready for bed.

Doing this will maintain your blow-out... especially if you're not looking for bone straight hair but just a very full afro but this can also give you a loose flat twist too depending on your texture and how many twists you do.

We are such trusting human beings. We see the conditioner and think that the worst that could happen is that it doens't moisturize our hair as much as we'd hoped. Little do we know the major, shocking lies about ingredients in our hair care products.

Sodium hydrozide (the active ingredient in hair relaxers) have been found in a number of regular and natural-targeted hair care products. Remember to read your labels ladies and don't be satisfied with being ignorant – not if you're serious about caring your hair anyway. Another recent discovery raised eyebrows and caused alarm. Watch the video about it below.

Lesson for today: Don't jump on every wagon that passes.
You'll get tired and maybe even hurt.

Shock & Horror: Locs Banned in Jamaica!

Mi cyaa believe mi eyes. (I can't believe what I am seeing.) A letter to the Editor of the Daily Observer in Jamaica, written by Michelle McDonald and published on September 5, 2011, voiced concern about new police force orders in relation to police deportment. According to Ms McDonald's letter, black women on the police force are being told that they can wear extensions but not locks. I am disturbed and hurt at the fact that there are clearly still mentally enslaved people in Jamaica.

Miss McDonald, you are totally right. If sloppiness is an issues, it should be dealt with. Sloppiness, however, has nothing to do with locs. I've seen as much dry untidy relaxed hair and I have locs. Yes, Miss McDonald. It is indeed "archaic."

Communicating the type of parting that you want for your locs with your stylist can be tricky. I know this because It took me 4 stylists to get the kind of parting I want. I created the simplistic images below to help you both decide and communicate the type of parting you want with your stylist.

Remember that these parts can be done at varying sizes. Also note that the Organic Parting is simply random and can be done in any way chosen.
